Senators May Change Position on Embryonic Stem Cell Research Funding

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With election results that saw a handful of pro-life senators defeated, embryonic stem cell research funding advocates are hoping to use that momentum to persuade more senators to change their position and vote for a measure that forces taxpayers to fund the unproven research. Last week, Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, indicated he thought there were enough votes in the Senate to override a possible second presidential veto of a funding bill. He also appeared to know where he could get a few more votes and talked about unnamed senators who may switch their position. One of those senators could be Sen. Kit Bond, a Missouri Republican who has a historically strong pro-life voting record and opposed the embryonic stem cell research funding bill this year. The Associated Press reported that Bond spokesman Rob Ostrander told it on Tuesday that it's possible the lawmaker could switch his position on the legislation. Ostrander said Bond was "reluctant to support an expansion of the president's stem cell policy that allows federal taxpayer dollars to be used for research in which human embryos are destroyed." But, Ostrander told LifeNews.com the "the Senator’s position has not changed" since previously declaring his opposition to the funding legislation in July and subsequently voting against it. Meanwhile, Sen. Johnny Isakson, a Georgia Republican who some say may change his mind on the funding measure, told AP he is standing firm against the legislation. “My position didn't change" because of the elections, he said.

    		The Billion Dollar Question.

    Why is it that the smart money is investing in Adult Stem Cell Research and not throwing billions of dollars at the other stuff? Why don't those people who promote embryonic stem cell research invest every last dollar that they have, right now, for the greater good? I will tell you why, because that would be a foolish investment. They would not see a good return on investment. That is why they invest millions into political campaigns to force the American Public to foot the bill for this effort. Asking for billions of dollars to finance this immoral, un-ethical,foolish destruction of human life. Am I missing something here?

The tissue produced mouse insulin, not human insulin, showing that the cells were highly adaptable to tissues in need of repair, Tulane University Magazine reported.

    LONDON, United Kingdom, November 8, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Heart attack victims will receive stem cell treatment using cells taken from their own bone marrow, in a breakthrough new technique scheduled to begin trials January in two London hospitals, the Daily Mail reported yesterday.

    In research being carried out at University College London Hospital and Barts and the London NHS, Patients suffering a heart attack will undergo regular treatment of an angioplasty to remove blockage to an artery, and then will receive an injection into the artery of stem cells harvested from the bone marrow in their hip, under local anesthetic. The whole procedure will take place within five hours of their attack. The treatment has shown remarkable success in growing heart tissue, in trials in other countries. Doctors hope the technique will lead to repairing damaged heart muscles and preventing further attacks and the development of heart failure. Only patients who sign a consent form will receive the experimental therapy, headed up by Professor John Martin of the British Heart Foundation and Dr. Anthony Mathur of Barts and the London NHS trust. “This is the first time in the world that stem cells have been used to stop the damage of acute heart attack,” Professor Martin told the Daily Mail. “It is very exciting. We feel we can make a considerable reduction in deaths and suffering from heart failure.” The use of adult stem cells or of cells harvested from umbilical cord blood shortly after the birth of a baby have been used successfully to treat multiple conditions, including spinal injury and blindness

The research does offer tremendous hope for the alleviation of human suffering. But you probably didn't hear about this amazing achievement because the stem cells the scientists used to build a human liver did not come from embryos: They came from umbilical cord blood.

     This is a very good reply to all people that think that embryonic stem cell research is the way to “help” our society. It is rather long, but well worth the read. It was written by Dr. Dan Pepin who was a guest of mine on Capitol Hill for our “Toast to Adult and Cord Blood Therapy: Helping Patients now and in the Future.
